A history of Ongar Juniors Football Club

Ongar Juniors Football Club is made up of over 150 young people.

Our football club based in Ongar, Essex, is a family friendly safe environment for young people to learn and develop their football skills.

Ongar Juniors Football Club was established as a community football club serving Ongar and the surrounding villages, including but not limited to Chipping Ongar, High Ongar, Shelley, Fyfield, Marden Ash, Stondon Massey, Blackmore, Doddinghurst, Willingale, Greensted, North Weald Bassett, Stanford Rivers.

The club was originally known as Ongar (Shelley Juniors) Football Club, it changed its name in 1987 to Ongar Juniors Football Club, and this was overseen by the then manager and club secretary Chris Barlow.

During early years Ongar Juniors played in the Ongar & District Junior Football League, which covered an area from North Weald out to Great Notley. The league folded in 1986.

Ongar Juniors Football Club joined the Harlow Council Recreational Football league, with some teams playing in the Harlow league up to 1999.

At that time Ongar Juniors Football Clubs home ground was at Great Stony School in Ongar. The club will always be eternally grateful to the then head master of the school Ron Barnes for allowing us sole use of the pitches.

Due to redevelopment of the Ongar’s Great Stony School site, Ongar Juniors Football Club had to find a new home. In 1994, Ongar Juniors were formally invited to move to Love Lane, Ongar, where we have been ever since.

In 1994, the club had 5 football teams running, unfortunately due to limited availability of playing space we had to reduce the football club to 3 teams, regretfully, reducing the availability of structured football for young people within the community.

It was in 1995 that Ongar Juniors Football Club moved into the Chelmsford Youth League, which we are still part of to this day.

In 2016 a single age group move to the newly formed The Brentwood Community Football Alliance (BCFA) Youth League. This was followed the following year by all mini soccer teams. We have 15 teams ranging from under 7 to under 16's.

We now have our own Soccer School running every Saturday morning for both boys and girls of reception and school year 1 age group.

Ongar Juniors is also now an FA Charter Standard Football Club, this means the club has:

  • A trained Welfare Officer
  • CRB (criminal records bureau) checks for all volunteers
  • Emergency Aid-trained volunteers linked to each team
  • Respect programme sign-up
  • An FA Level One coach for each youth team
  • Appropriate club administration in place
  • A volunteer co-ordinator
